Lights. Camera. Action.
Imagine walking through Mordor, being waited on hand and foot at the Grand Budapest, or running from the T-Rex at Jurassic World. Well, imagine no more! These 10 iconic filming locations are a must visit for any movie buff!
Star Wars, The Force Awakens: Dingle, Co. Kerry, Ireland
The undisclosed planet that Luke was found hiding out on at the end of the film was one of the islands off the coast of the Dingle Peninsula. He’s easier to find now, just drive along Slea Head Drive. It’s hard to miss the “Star Wars Town” signs plastered everywhere, written in both English and Gaelic.
And if that wasn’t enough to awaken the Force in you, then check out this awesome video that Ireland.com put together.
The Dark Knight Rises: Mehrangarth Fort, Jodhpur, India
Home to the infamous prison with the Pit and Batman’s ultimate comeback, the Mehrangarth Fort is typically known as a museum in Jodhpur.
Funny that it was such a dark and horrible place for the movie when Rudyard Kipling referred to the fort as “A Palace that might have been built by Titans and coloured by the morning sun.”
Lighting must really be everything.
Jurassic World: Honolulu, Hawaii, USA
Much of the Jurassic films were shot in Hawaii and not on some isle in the Caribbean like they would have you believe. The Honolulu Zoo was a big spot for the latest film.
6 Flags New Orleans, Lousiana
In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, most of New Orleans was wiped out, including an old 6 Flags theme park that was left in ruin. Until Universal Studios got the brilliant idea to turn the old site into Jurassic World.
X-Men Apocalypse: The Englefield Estate, Berkshire, England
Walk the halls of the gifted students at The Englefield Estate, a real life…uhhh…Estate. You can tour the grounds, see the gardens or rent it out for a legit X-Men themed party.
(But really, how cool would that be??)
The Hobbit: Matamata, New Zealand
Welcome to Hobbiton!!
The Grand Budapest Hotel: Gorlitz, Germany
Wes Anderson wouldn’t have wanted you to stay anywhere else, but sadly it was just posing as a hotel and is really a department store, Görlitzer Warenhaus (de) . If only The Grand Budapest was a reality. *sigh*
The Hunger Games: Atlanta, GA, USA
President Snow’s mansion from Catching Fire can be found at the Swan House as well as the futuristic tributes quarters and training facility can be found at the Marriott Marquis Hotel.
Harry Potter: Glencoe Village, Scotland
Dragon’s out of the bag, Hagrid.
The Lord of the Rings: Tongariro National Park, New Zealand
Take a leisurely stroll through Mordor and cross Mount Doom at Tongariro National Park.
Die hard fans can take the same hike that Sam and Frodo did too.
Captain America Civil War: Schkeuditz, Germany
That expect fight scene where they tried to cram every Marvel character ever into one place was filmed at the Leipzig/Halle Airport in Schkeuditz, Germany . And I use the term filmed loosely cause we all know how much they relied on those special effects.
**Bonus!! Just cause we couldn’t help but throw in another shout out to the Emerald Isle.**
The Princess Bride: The Cliffs of Moher, Co. Mayo, Ireland
Still trying to figure out how they scaled The Cliffs of Insanity so easily. It’s inconceivable!!
