At USIT, we want you to have the holiday of a lifetime without it breaking the bank, so besides our awesome travel packages, we have put together a few money saving tips to help you make the most of your holiday.

Bookings Are The Basics, Avoid Extra Costs

This can easily be the most expensive part of your trip, or if you follow these tips, maybe the not so much.

Book Air Travel 3-4 Months in Advance

While many have heard about this, few practice it. You’ll be able to beat the rush as well as get first dibs on the best seats. Typically buying on midweek days, such as Tuesday and Wednesday, prove to be cheaper days to book a flight as well.

Go During the Off Season

If you’re not travelling purely to enjoy the weather, going on a holiday in the off months is money saving! Flight and accommodation are significantly lower as well as local area attractions. And if you go during the off-season months, there will be fewer tourists to compete with.

Pencil in Plans

Before you jet off, go ahead and look up your must do’s. You get a better idea of how much they’ll cost as well as how much you need to budget out. By thinking ahead, you’ll also be able to figure out if you need to make any reservations for the tours and activities.

Eat and Greet

(At least) 3 times a day, for every day of your holiday… yup, meals add up quickly!

Six Block Rule

Most people outside the USA aren’t used to this saying, but the rule itself is still spot on. It basically says that restaurants within close proximity to attractions are going to be more expensive. So venture outside of those tourist traps and find those hole-in-the-wall spots for your meals.

Shop Local

Cooking on holiday might sound tedious (and I’m definitely not saying that you have to eat every meal in), but cooking your own meal at least once a day will save you loads! Hit up local markets to get a sample of the fresh food and local cuisines.

Have a Light Lunch

If those expensive restaurants are still calling, why not try them for lunch instead of dinner? You’ll get the same great food and most places offer a lunch menu with a significantly lower price point.

Attractions

See it all and spend the opposite. When it comes to attractions, there are deals to be had all around the globe!

Walking Tours

Most cities, even our own beloved Dublin, offer free (that’s right, FREE) walking tours. These tours can be found all around the globe, from the States to Australia. You’ll get to see and learn a lot, just make sure you wear comfortable shoes!

Museums

Besides walking tours, there are a wide variety of museums that are free to the public as well. Some of the bigger ones are the National Gallery in London, the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, D.C., and the Nicholson Museum in Sydney. Even some museums that do cost a couple euro offer free nights or days occasionally, typically once a month.

Go Play Outside

Go for a hike in a National Park. While these aren’t always free, it’s cheap enough for the sights you’ll see. National Parks are a great way to see the natural beauty of the land. Arenal Volcano National Park in Costa Rica, Krka National Park, Croatia, and Fiordland National Park in New Zealand are some of the top parks in the world.
